More than 600 independent family farms comply with the Animal Welfare Approved criteria, which provide consumers, grocers, chefs and other food buyers one comprehensive seal of approval that differentiates family farms that treat their animals compassionately from agribusinesses that subject animals to cruel and unnatural conditions.
Accreditation is available for beef cattle, dairy cattle, ducks, chickens, geese, pigs, rabbits, sheep, goats and turkeys. Family farms receiving the Animal Welfare Approved seal adhere to rigorous standards for the high-welfare treatment of farm animals, standards which in turn lead to environmentally sound farming practices. Farmers must adhere to Animal Welfare Approved standards for all animals of an approved species. No split or dual production is permitted.
Administered by the non-profit Animal Welfare Institute, this program is offered free of charge to farmers.
