Steve and Dianne Proffitt began their grassfed beef operation in 2000 out of a passion for farming and living close to the land. They have almost 70 head of Scottish Aberdeen/commercial Cross Angus cattle. Well-suited to forage and also with excellent mothering abilities, the herd thrives on 100% USDA certified organic pastures, without added hormones, and are never confined to a feedlot.
The growing farm turned into a full family venture when Steve and Dianne’s daughter Shelley and her husband Brian decided they would like to live a simpler, country lifestyle. They help with the day to day management of the farm, and their children Dewi and Zoe lend a hand as well. Steve reports that, “They all love living and working together on the farm.”
Everyone on Proffitt Family Farms viewed joining Animal Welfare Approved as an important way to show the value they place on high-welfare farming. Taking care of their cattle humanely is at the core of their operation, and it is exactly why their herd lives out its days on pasture. They explain, “When we tell our customers about Animal Welfare Approved and our certification they seem glad to know that such a program exists. The logo is helpful and validates what we tell our customers. It confirms us as a family farm.”
