Purple Rain Vineyard has plenty of heart and care pumped into it daily, from an entire family. Luisa DePaiva, her husband James Voisin, and their three daughters Danielle, Nastacia, and Octavia, all pitch in to make sure that every aspect of the farm and vineyard receives proper attention. This includes taking care of their flock of laying chickens, although they are mostly tended by Octavia, the youngest daughter. With this attention, it’s no surprise that they’re doing well. Luisa explains, “First and foremost, we have incredible respect for our chickens because they are providing us with eggs, the ultimate whole food.” The relationship between the flock and family is completely focused on the health and happiness of the chickens.
A number of practices ensure the flock’s well-being. The chickens’ eggs are certified organic and any grain supplementing their pasture comes from a local mill that makes fresh organic feed according to the family’s specifications. They are kept on green pasture (where they favor eating the weeds), and are also provided with beet greens, kale, and collards from the garden. The eggs and other farm food are sold through a local community supported agriculture program (CSA).
Luisa explains that applying to the Animal Welfare Approved program was a part of building community relationships and providing trustworthy, wholesome food. She notes, “[The label] gives comfort and trust. When a consumer purchases from us, they know we are part of an organization that has recognized us and given us the seal of approval that we have done what is right.” It is clear that Purple Rain Vineyard will remain an important local asset to the community and a reliable source of humanely and sustainably raised food.
