Alschuler wrote to us from Warren, Illinois asking for ideas on how he and his community can stop the development of a 13,000 head dairy cattle factory. “The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way in which its animals are treated. I hold that the more helpless a creature, the more entitled it is to protection by man from the cruelty of man.”
–Gandhi
My heart goes out to the people and animals caught up in this outrage. I see pictures of Hallmark in my mind as used and discarded animals are dragged and beaten for profit. This is typical of the Agri Bullies. Not only do they have contempt for their obligations to care for their animals, but this arrogant abuse manifests itself in their interactions with other stakeholders: the community, the environment, and the staffs employed.
Many great philosophers have drawn a link between the treatment of animals and the consciousness of a nation. We may want to think about that when we look for inexpensive food. Certainly, we must manage our budgets and keep our books in the black. However, for a few cents more, and some times even for less, we can eat and drink without abusing those who allowed us that privilege. Buying directly from a farmer you trust is one of the best ways to do this.
As the Director of the Animal Welfare Approved Program, I urge you to support this campaign. Write to the governor and make your voice heard. I know I, for one, will not be purchasing this company’s milk. The company will only exist if it makes a profit. If no one buys its milk, there will be no dairy. Go to your local Farmer’s Market…ask around…you will find milk produced in a way that doesn’t trouble your conscience, damage the environment or abuse the animals it came from.
Hopefully the milk you find will carry the Animal Welfare Approved seal, your assurance of high animal welfare, environmental consciousness and family farming.
