Mike Jones operates a pastured pork operation in Louisburg, N.C. MAE Farm Meats Since he was a young boy, Mike has dreamed of owning his own farm. In 2004, he and his wife Suzanne were able to realize that dream, and they now rotate 230 pigs on 73 acres. On the property, pigs are able to express their natural behaviors – playing in the mud and giving birth in nests they build in the woods.

Though MAE farm itself is relatively new, Mike has a long history of experience in the swine industry. Having worked in confinement operations, Mike decided to switch to a more sustainable method. In addition to providing a better environment for the pigs, the MAE Farm is a true testament to his dedication to humane farming. On the difference between confinement and pastured production, Mike says, “One of the big differences is that my system requires a lot less capital to start and maintain. It requires a lot less energy. But it requires a bigger personal commitment from me.”

Today, Mike markets his hogs to retailers, restaurants and individuals at the Raleigh Farmer’s Market. In addition to raising and marketing his pigs, Mike works as an extension associate for the North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University. In this position, he shares his knowledge with other farmers, teaching them how to raise pigs on pasture.

Two of Mike’s main goals for the MAE Farm are to be truly sustainable-both economically and environmentally-and to be an inspiration to other farmers.
